Introducing the New and Improved Shoei RF-1400
Posted by Mario M. on Feb 1st 2021
When Shoei introduced the RF-1200 model in 2013 it quickly became regarded as the pinnacle of what the brand could produce and it set the bar for all premium full face helmets on the market. It was only a matter of time before the predecessor arrived. Could Shoei sharpen the sword or is the RF-1400 a compulsory rehash?
Released in the start of January 2021, the RF-1400 undoubtedly adds to what made the RF-1200 the gold standard. Keeping the material the shell is built out of the same (multi-ply matrix aim+ and hand-laid woven layers of fiberglass), the new and improved RF-1400 comes equipped with changes in the design that make it more aerodynamic and less noisy than the RF-1200 while meeting the latest Snell and DOT safety standards.
The increase in aerodynamics comes in large part courtesy of Shoei’s refined in-house wind tunnel facility that leads to a six percent reduction in lift and four percent reduction in drag versus the RF-1200 while adding to the noise reduction. The dual-layer of multi-density EPS has integrated grooves to allow air to circulate. Also, the exhaust outlet vent located underneath the spoiler has been enlarged to improve hot-air expulsion.
One of the biggest upgrades is the CWR-F2 shield that now has the benefit of Vortex Generators on its side to improve aerodynamics and reduce wind noise and a new true flat design that improves visibility and lessens distortion. Further, the new shield boasts UV ray protection, an included fog resistant Pinlock Evo that is now 10% larger, and the all-new locking mechanism located at the center of the chin bar.
The RF-1400 creates a better seal around the neck that further decreases noise levels and feels more comfortable than the RF-1200. The helmet comes equipped with a 3D Max-Dry Interior II liner that is fully removable, washable, replaceable and adjustable. This material not only provides better comfort but also does a good job of molding to the rider’s head and keeping it dry from sweat. A new design to the cheek pads gives them more volume, which allows for a better fitment around the jaw.
Speed Addicts Hot Take: Shoei delivered real world improvements on what had been one of the best helmets ever produced. If you dug your RF-1200 you’ll be very pleased with this upgrade. That said we’ve seen some opinions on the web that “Shoei could have done more…”, implying that they were somehow disappointed that Shoei didn’t reinvite the helmet from the ground up. We’d have to disagree. Shoei went the Porsche route here and we approve. When the new 911 comes out you want refinement not reinvention.
The Shoei RF-1400 comes with a price tag of $499.99 for matte colors and $599.99 for shells with graphics - Shop for Yours Now!
